This isn't the first time I've found myself at Sundaes & Cones, located in the East Village, which has a surprising few of quality ice cream shops given the vicinity of one very lovely park. However, it IS the first time it's being introduced to the IceCreaming, so it was like the first time, all over again :).
Founded in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn in 1991, they officially relocated their Sunset Park shop to the East Village in 2006, and foodies took note - this was no "ordinary" ice cream shop, featuring flavors you'd be more likely to find in the Chinatown Ice Cream shop - Black Sesame, Wasabi, Green Tea. But, because the Chinatown Ice Cream shop has yet to be frequented by me this year - I went for a flavor that I think is highly underrated and not often showcased in ice cream - Banana (and it should be! Hello, banana cream pie anyone?!).
I think that more than anything Sundaes & Cones need to be commended on their flavors. At the time I went, a friend of mine sampled no less than six flavors (the staff certainly gets 5 stars on patience) - we couldn't choose between Lavendar, Toasted Coconut, Pineapple.... the list goes on, and varies every year as new flavors are introduced. Forget the 31 flavors of Baskin Robbins and treat yourself to whatever surprises this little shop has in store. Then wander over to a shady tree in the park and find your zen.
